County President Visits WyvernSunday 30th December 2001 marked the first ever official visit by an officer of the County RFU to the Wyvern. The County President, Clive MacDonald, committed at the start of his Presidency to visit all of the clubs in Somerset and so it came to pass that he accepted our invitation and joined us for our annual fixture against the Fire Brigade. Unfortunately, the Fire Brigade were not so accommodating and declined to play because of a frozen pitch. As they left the pitch, wiping the mud from their shoes, we decided there were enough of us to make up two sides and so we played 13 against 13, which included the Fire Brigade team captain!! Goodness knows what they do when they get to a fire and decide it is too hot to fight!! Our match was entertaining and played in just the right spirit. The Reds beat the Stripes by 17-5, despite being the underdogs throughout! Clive was highly complimentary about the Rugby Club and about the Wyvern Club itself. He said a few words to the gathered players and family, expressing how pleased he was at the contribution the Wyvern Rugby Club made to players locally and he hoped the club would soon apply to rejoin the English RFU. Below are a few pictures from the day.
